Material Balance and Energy Efficiency
Material Balance
The following diagram shows the material balance of a SunCoal Industries CarboREN® plant for 60,000 tons of material input per year (36,000 tons of mixed green waste and 24,000 tons of grass cuttings):
17,600 tons of energy-rich and environmentally friendly biocoal can be produced from a yearly input of 60,000 tons of biomass. Approximately ¾ of the mass will be separated during the process as water/steam or impurities (sand, stones, etc.).

Energy Efficiency
The following diagram shows the energy efficiency of a CarboREN plant (stand-alone) for 60,000 tons of raw biomass input per year (36,000 tons of mixed green waste and 24,000 tons of grass cuttings):
For each ton of biomass, supporting energy in the form of electricity and gas must be used.
Through the innovative CarboREN process only seven percent of the created energy needs to be used in order to initiate the production and keep it running. Per ton of biomass input only 99 kwh of electricity and gas in total are needed.
A sensible alternative to the stand-alone plant is the integration in an existing power plant facility. Steam from the power plant can be used for carbonization and drying. Excess steam from fluidized bed drying can be redirected to an existing district heating network.
