SunCoal Industries HTC Pilot Plant, Technology Center and Laboratory
SunCoal Industries has built a technology center in Ludwigsfelde, Germany, which currently includes a hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) pilot plant and research laboratory.

From 2008 to 2010, the HTC pilot plant analyzed the HTC process for developing the CarboREN® technology. The following activities were especially critical:
In 2011 the pilot plant was converted for customer testing purposes, encompassing the following areas:

From 2008 to 2010, the HTC pilot plant analyzed the HTC process for developing the CarboREN® technology. The following activities were especially critical:
>
Systematic research for refining various types of biomass (wood, leaves, grass and grass cuttings, etc.) through hydrothermal carbonization
>
Process optimization with the goal of producing biofuel with a high energy yield
>
Optimization of the energy management to increase energy efficiency
>
Development of a concept to handle the resulting water from the process
>
Development of the optimal input and output procedures
>
Optimization of the steps for using specific process models
>
Creation of an industrial proportioned HTC-cooker through up-scaling
In 2011 the pilot plant was converted for customer testing purposes, encompassing the following areas:
>
Preparation of capacities for carbonization and optimization with customer biomass
>
Specific analysis of biomass, biocoal and process water, etc., in the in-house lab and with external partners
>
Production of product samples for further research and development projects, also with external partners
