The CarboREN® technology developed by SunCoal Industries allows for the production of an environmentally friendly energy source from organic waste at an industrial scale (size of a typical CarboREN plant: 20,000-500,000 tons of dry biocoal per year). Regions with a high yield of affordable biomass, for example waste from existing conversion plants or agriculture, could especially profit from this technology.
The refined and energy-dense biocoal, or secondary products such as biomass-to-liquid fuel, can be transported in an environmentally friendly manner and at low-cost overseas. Countries that have a strong demand for solid biomass to use in coal-fired power plants for co-firing, and government subsidies for the use of renewable energies, can import biocoal with bulk freight or tanker ships.
